The attached article on "mindfulness" is a worthy read. More and more employers are realizing the direct benefits of sponsoring or facilitating mindfulness into their wellness or employee engagement and well-being programs. The hard results are now starting to show what all who practice mindfulness already know - it is tremendous for our overall well-being.

Growing up playing sports, where workouts were only good if there was pain - "no pain, no gain" - I never imagined I would turn to mindfulness to be part of my "workout". In a visit for my wife - who suffers from an auto-immune disease called Lupus - an Ayurvedic practitioner tested us for stress levels. I went along to be the caring husband and found out that 22 of the 27 pressure points were overly stressed (my wife had 2). Although I would never label my state-of-mind or physical condition as "stressful" at the time (no pain, no gain is how I grew up being in shape), it was clear I was loaded with stress. The advice was "do something about it now, or watch yourself breakdown over time". In addition to exercise and eating better, I began practicing yoga and mindfulness. Over time, this has become a real positive in my life and my career.

At Smith Brothers, we now have a professional on our team that works with us on employee well-being. Totally voluntary, we have started to integrate mindfulness training and practice into our work days, in addition to many other well-being initiatives. There is no doubt in my business mind, that helping people manage the ungodly stress we all face in our daily lives is good for business. What is better than being able to sponsor something that is so healthy for our people in all aspects of their lives, while also being good for business? Read this article and see how this is quickly becoming no secret. I am glad to share our experiences here and also make you aware that our Healthy Leader Program for clients is a good place to start.

Be Well.

Across the country, businesses are choosing to go green. In addition to helping the planet, environmentally friendly practices and facilities can enhance the reputation of a business and lower its energy and water costs. Businesses are also encouraged to go green by government tax credits and other incentives.

8 Ways to Mitigate Flooding Risks

Superstorm Sandy inundated the underground caverns of lower Manhattan and caused enough personal and financial disruption elsewhere in the city and region to spawn a boom in flood-resiliency efforts. As a consequence, the engineering community has been tasked with delivering cost-effective resiliency for assets that range from single-family homes to entire cities.

Surrounded by Risk

Risk is all around us. Imagine if you traveled back in time to the days of horse and buggy and you described to someone what it’s like driving down a road in a car at 70 mph, with a semi truck coming at you at the same speed, with nothing separating you but a thin white line.

How Retirees Decide Whether to Roll Over Their 401(k)s
Think Advisor
When American workers with significant assets in their defined contribution plan had to decide what to do with the money after they left full-time employment, 62% in a recent survey moved it out of the plan, and the vast majority did so with the help of an advisor.

How Expenses Will Change When You Retire
Benefits Pro
You may have a budget all figured out that’s worked fine for years, but if you’re planning on retiring, you might want to consider how your spending will change once you’re out of the workplace.

4 Things You Need to Know About the Social Security Spousal Benefit
Life Health Pro
Most people are, of course, aware of the retirement benefits that workers can collect from Social Security. However, not everyone seems to be aware that a spouse of a retired or disabled worker, even if not eligible for Social Security on their own record, may be entitled to collect benefits based on the record of the worker spouse.

It’s a tale as old as the hills, one that still rings true: Employers think they’re paying their employees a fair wage, and employees disagree.

Winter and the snow and cold that it brings can do some serious damage to a home’s exterior. There are several very common problems usually brought on by the winter months, including damage done to roofs, foundations and pipes.

The Other Way to Stay

Not long ago, when families went on vacation, the money spent on their residences’ rent or mortgage was considered “sunk costs.” Vacationers would flip the lights, lock the doors, and say goodbye to their homes for a week or two—worrying only if the timers would turn on or if the neighbors would remember to feed the cat.

Motorcycle Insurance
Insurance Information Institute
Choosing the right insurance policy is much like choosing the right motorcycle. You want it to fit your needs and lifestyle, but at the same time be within your budget. Although most states require you to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage, other types of coverage are usually optional. Always ask your insurance agent or company representative which laws apply in your state.
