A Letter From the President – September 2022
As we start to see the end of the summer, I am so proud of our Smith Brothers Team and our collective energy and time in giving back this summer.
Our big purpose of Help Others came out big time with our day at The Boys & Girls Club of Hartford Southwest location. Over 50 of our team members worked through some hot humid weather to do landscaping, cleaning, painting, and organizing getting the club ready for the fall season. When supplies fell short – we reached out to one of our clients, American Industries, who came through with a dump truck full of gravel filler and to allow us to finish a key part of the job. A special thanks to American Industries out of Jewett City, CT who dropped what they were doing and came through for the kids.
We also finished our six week joint venture with Junior Achievement and The Boys & Girls Club of Hartford. We piloted a combined program from Junior Achievement’s entrepreneurial content and our Smith Brothers principle centered leadership training, delivering it to ten high school students selected from The Boys & Girls Club of Hartford. These young adults learned how to identify a “problem” or need and create a product or service – then design it, finance it, and market it. In addition, they defined a bigger purpose for their “company” and stated the Values for which they would lead from to operate their company. The participants had tremendous engagement and we ended with a “Shark Tank” opportunity where the students pitched their product/service to a panel of judges.
A special thanks to Kids For Kids CT who, along with Smith Brothers, helped fund the program, materials, food for the students, contest prizes, photos, and backpacks for each student as they headed back to school – all these put a special touch on the program.
Lastly, we hosted two interns this summer – a Junior Finance major at the UCONN School of Business and a Sophomore Finance and Entrepreneurial student from Babson College Business School. They learned a lot from shadowing many of our team members and contributed to sourcing and marketing efforts for our Private Equity Risk Management niche. Nothing better than learning about something – in this case Private Equity – putting the learning into practice by making 300 calls, sharing our value proposition – the “why” we are a different story than they may be getting. They also learned about valuations and due diligence in our M&A area, as well as studied Investment Models in our Financial Services area.
We hope your summer has been great. Thank you and all our stakeholders for Helping Us Help Others.
Be Sure to Help Others.
